Expanding Mary Seacole's Archive

Cultural Path

The path foregrounds salient cultural aspects of the environments Seacole grew up in, taking into consideration the ethnic and social implications of being Black and female in the 19th century. This expansive contextualization intends to prevent the perception of Seacole as British or Jamaican, and seeks to portray the totality (although the majority is more likely) of the spaces the doctress had to navigate.

It is also an attempt to remediate the underrepresentation of her Jamaican roots in the analyses of her life, starting with Seacole's own brief discussion of her Creole heritage.
