Provenance
This manuscript is a fragment of a larger work, originally 160 folios, that has been referred to as Bute 13, because it was once owned by John Patrick Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute. It was broken into four parts by Kraus in the late twentieth century and sold separately. Three of the four parts are now in institutional collections: LJS 188 (part II of IV), LJS 191 (part III) and Huntington mssHM 60320 (part IV). I could not discover the whereabouts of part I.Kurtz and Voigts note that the parts of Bute 13 were all written at different times, ranging in date from the late fifteenth century to the middle of the sixteenth century. They also suggest that the parts were written and circulated as booklets before they were bound.
