Program Goal - Management Strategies, Practices, and Decisions
Consensus Decision-Making in Organizations Discussion
This discussion artifact demonstrates my understanding of an organizational project management strategy known as consensus decision-making (CDM), which I learned about from LIM 536 Library Project Management. CDM is a group decision resulting from a group working on a common goal Ford (2012). My discussion reiterates Ford’s definition, outlining the advantages and disadvantages of CDM and my application of it in a real-life experience working at a community non-profit. Both this activity and Ford’s article taught me that, for a CDM model to be successful, LIS managers or decision-makers must consider a few things. Those include assessing the model's applicability to the team because it can be time-consuming, strengthening active listening and communication skills among group members, embracing conflict in discussions and doing so respectfully, and assessing group members’ feelings about the proposal.
Learnings and Reflection on Project Management Course
This artifact is a reflection memo assignment of my project management learnings from the LIM 536 Library Project Management course. Imagining that I am a LIS project manager, I articulated my project management approach, strategy in building, developing, and leading project teams, my team expectations, foreseeing and addressing team challenges, and method to direct and control project processes to ensure quality deliverables. To give a glimpse, under the project management approach, I understand that practicing emotional intelligence as a leader contributes to successful team performance.
Conclusion
The CDM model and my demonstrated approach to project management are what I will take with me as an entering LIS professional. Project management requires tools and traits the project manager should attain and exercise among team collaborations. Without applying and assessing management strategies, practices, and decisions, results are unmet project missions, team dysfunctions, and incomplete deliverables. Therefore, there would be an unsuccessful project.
