Libraries, the Military, and Reading in WWI

"What the Training Camp Libraries are Doing" Article

This newspaper article from the Ogden Standard discusses the books desired by those in military camps. Although the American Library Association suggested people donate a wide variety of books, this article encourages donating only those books that are “readable, interesting, and in good condition.” It includes a list of books donated by those "who evidently think the soldier will read anything,” including “The Undertaker’s Review… Sunday school books of fifty years ago, the annual reports of the Bureau of Ethnology, reports of the Episcopal Eye and Ear Hospital, Paley’s ‘Moral Philosophy’ and copies of Needlework.” (Note the article at the top of the page extolls the virtues of Daylight Savings Time for giving gardeners more time for growing their gardens. Daylight Savings was put into effect in the US on March 31, 1918.)
