"Hey Fellows!" Poster

In addition to soliciting donations of books, the ALA also collected money to purchase books. The November 1918 fund drive was dubbed the United War Work Campaign since it united the ALA and other social service agencies to reach a broader portion of the public and raise more money. Public libraries across the country distributed 4.75 million bookmarks encouraging monetary donations during the campaign, and 47,500 posters like this one were displayed in public libraries across the country (Wiegand 62).

The 1918 United War Work Campaign netted $3.8 million for purchasing books (62).
