John L. Lewis and his supporters provided resources for local strikers that were force to live in tent cities after negotiations failed. Though John L. Lewis pushed for moderation, even his demands were not met, leading 200,000 men to strike on November 1, 1919. Companies responded with the federal “Lever Act” fining miners one dollar per day for striking.
