Even with all these difficulties, by April 1920 there was a demand for wages to be increased by 27% along with other requests. None of these were granted. As a result, Miners were upset leading to contested elections of United Mine Worker leaders. Due to certain radical minorities pushing for their own goals, there was a struggle for power against the American Federation of Labor, declaring it an enemy.
