Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

Teachers expressed amazement at how they can support and extend student learning using the iMovie tool and Schoology platform. One teacher expressed “I can see myself using these tools to teach specific skills like chopping and dicing [in my culinary arts class]!” Several teachers also began to collaborate and visit each others’ classrooms in order to create videos of the various vocational skills their students are mastering for the student IEPs.
In this project, students felt excited to take on the role of the facilitators of knowledge. The process of creating the storyboard to producing the video tutorials helped them to reflect on the vocational skills they are learning as well as to consider the accessibility of their content to their audience. They were also thrilled at the prospect of these videos been utilized as resources even after they graduate from Perez.
In our planning, we discussed that one way to make these tutorials more student friendly is to consider creating shorter, more specific skill-based videos. Many of our videos showcased an entire process that might require too many steps for some students. Also, it might be a good practice for other students to follow the tutorials and provide feedback before publishing them on Schoology.
