Teaching & Learning in the 21st Century

Artifact

Creating a portfolio “course” rather than a group, as had been considered, was much more efficient.

The artifact below illustrates how all materials required for students to include in their portfolio can be shared with all members of the course much more efficiently than if the school were to create separate mentor/mentee groups.

The artifact below also demonstrates the types of artifacts required for each portfolio. In addition to a resume, letter of introduction, personal statement, and letters of recommendations, students were expected to submit carefully selected artifacts and reflections about those chosen artifacts.

Creating the Portfolio Course

The first step in this process was to create a course titled “SoHDA Senior Defense Portfolios.” This option is better than having to create several “groups” within the Schoology platform, especially when managing student portfolios.

In step 2, the teacher configured the course, the subject area was set to “Other,” the grade level included a range from 9-12, and the grading period was set to “PD Grading Period.” As a reminder, any course created outside of Misis will not affect student GPA or be part of their official report cards.

Imported Mentors and Mentees
In the members tab, the course admin imported all mentors (teachers) and made them “Admins.” Then, the course administrator imported all Mentees (students).

Grading Groups
Finally, the course admin pulls from the “Members” bank to create each grading group by clicking on the “Organize members into grading groups” box. Each mentor is assigned as the title for each respective group. The GIF to the left illustrates how each teacher can be assigned a group of mentees as part of their caseload. In this instance, all teachers, including support staff, were assigned a caseload of five students to “follow.”
