Instructional Goal

Students will be able to construct an argument supported by evidence for how increases in human population and per-capita consumption of natural resources impact earth’s systems and present their argument through the use of Google Slides.

[Clarification Statement: Examples of evidence include grade-appropriate databases on human populations and the rates of consumption of food and natural resources (such as freshwater, mineral, and energy). Examples of impacts can include changes to the appearance, composition, and structure of Earth’s systems as well as the rates at which they change. The consequences of increases in human populations and consumption of natural resources are described by science, but science does not make the decisions for the actions society takes.]

 Google:
A Search engine.  Used in this lesson for research and finding images to create the Google slides presentation.

 
 Google Slides: 
A presentation program, part of the free web-based office software suite offered by Google within its Google Drive service.

 
 Google Drive:
A file storage and synchronization service developed by Google.  Google Drive allows users to store files in the cloud, synchronize files across devices, and share files.

Task Force Recommendations and ISTE Standards

How does this work engender creative communicators and promote learner agency?
Creative Communicator (ISTE 6d):  The student-created Human Impact presentation applies to the Creative Communicator ISTE standard because students are able to present content that customizes the message for their intended audience, their peers, using Google Slides.
 
Learner Agency (TFR 1):  Students are able to enact a continuum for achieving learner agency by being given autonomy in selecting the type of sphere they want to address in addition to selecting the scientific problem to study.
