Teaching & Learning in the 21st Century

Lesson Structure

To motivate and engage students the teachers used Starburst candy as a manipulative for students to identify fraction sets.  After students identified fraction sets, they used the information to create charts and graphs.

Lesson Structure

The teacher then used the fraction lesson to teach students how to create and read charts and graphs in Numbers.

Lesson Structure

The teacher prompted students to share their presentations, peer review, and to critique the reasoning of others in a safe environment.

Student Sample #1

The student explains the definition of a numerator and denominator.

The student then groups the candy by colors and identifies the fraction for each color. Next, the student explains the pie chart and bar graph. The student then compares the amounts of each candy color and writes a number sentence to show the difference.

Student Sample #2

The student explains the definition of the numerator and denominator.

The student arranges the candy to form a bar graph and explains the fraction of each color represented.

Next, the student explains the pie chart and bar graph and compares the candy colors from greatest to least.

The student did not complete the final step which prompted students to write an equation to solve the difference between the greatest and least.
