Teaching & Learning in the 21st Century

Reflection

When students first began using the platform, their work product included simple topic sentences on each slide. Now they have advanced to more detailed writing, importing pictures, gifs, sounds, and videos. As a culminating task, they conducted oral presentations where they controlled the speed of the slide with a clicker.

“I like to give them the opportunity to know what it is like to speak in front of an audience.”

Students have learned not to simply read off a slide, but to know enough about it to present fluidly. The challenges present in the class are the different languages spoken. All students are in the ELD 1-2 category -- new to the English language, and sometimes it is more difficult because they do not have fluency in their original language. The Google Slide project gives the teacher time to work intensively with students who need the extra assistance in acclimating to the English language.

As students progress in their development of English skills, they can step away from the translating tools and move toward autonomous work on Google Slides.

Overall, students are learning to create a presentation that leverages technology as they collaboratively conduct research, write, and orally present their topic.
