Dr. Dickey saw his work as racial uplift. He said Negroes must “have better houses in order that people will have more respect for us. We can’t live in unpainted shacks and people respect you like they should.” Like Booker T. Washington, Dr. Dickey believed that African Americans needed to improve themselves in order for whites to respect them.
