Following the Leader

When Moses led his people out of slavery, he had a great navigator and a couple of tablets codifying the rules. When four million American slaves were freed in 1865, they had the same navigational tools but no single interpreter. The freed slaves agreed on the goals --- life, liberty and property --- as endowed in America’s founding documents. Without a guide, however, the path to political, social, and economic equality often wandered.
