INTL 190 - Haiti in a Transnational Context

History of Brazil

Brazil throughout history has notably switched with different ideas of nationalism and identity through the many different types of regimes over the years. Brazil, like many of the other Latin American countries, often struggled to establish recognition as a global power in the eyes of many Western countries. Historically, Brazil endured many different types of eras that reimagined national identity and power, like the Integralistas and Estado Novo era under Vargas. Recognition and power are often recurring themes that Brazil is trying to encapsulate through political and economic policies that are relevant in today's society.

In early 1930, Brazil marked a historical turning point for the working class. This era of radical political change was initiated when Getulio Vargas emerged as a strong political ally for the working class. Vargas advocated for laws that help the labor class such as introducing unions and more rights. During this time, the Communist Party of Brazil focused on the Marxists-Leninist theory on how the government should organize the working and capitalist class.
