INTL 190 - Haiti in a Transnational Context

Introduction

Welcome to Brazil!

In this section, we will be diving into the relationship Haiti and Brazil have with one another. We have the opportunity to share with you all the roles Brazil has had with Haiti as well as some commonalities. Some of those topics include culture, immigration, instability, and the roles of ABC countries in Haiti. In more recent years Haiti's ecotourism elites have taken notice of capitalizing on the African ancestry of Brazil, similar to Haiti. In doing so they have made it a focal point of bringing more people of African descent to Brazil to see the culture.

We are going to take a deeper look at the upcoming sections of Brazil and Haiti’s relationship and interactions with one another. First, a quick recap of current events in Haiti. Haiti’s former President Jovenel Moïse was assassinated in his home last July. He pushed Haiti into a less democratic country which has caused major instability within the state. The former president had made a lot of enemies, those who held power as well as the majority who didn’t which is why it is still unknown who had killed him. He had proposals to change Haiti’s constitution that allowed for him to stay in power longer as well as, “... effectively abolish the Haitian Senate and establish a vice president who reports to the president, instead of a prime minister.” (Wamsley) With these changes made he would have been able to push Haiti towards a less democratic and fair state even if he didn’t outright say that. Now there must be elections to replace the former president but with conditions as unstable as they are it may not be the best idea for the country to do so. Haiti is still also facing its comeback from the 2010 earthquake and the cholera outbreak that UN Peacekeepers brought with them to Haiti. According to Beaubien, “The outbreak, which is still ongoing, has sickened nearly 800,000 people and killed nearly 9,000. Prior to 2010 cholera had not been reported in Haiti in decades.”(Beaubien) This still has crippling effects on Haiti and its people, with infrastructure and health care systems too poor there is no way for people to rebuild their lives. Due to the instability in Haiti, many Haitians have looked to the United States and other countries such as the ABC countries (Argentina, Brazil, and Chile) for help.
