Iberian Cultures: The Mediterranean and Transatlantic Blueprint

Muslim Reign vs. Christian Monarchy

The arrival of the Muslims to the Iberian Peninsula marks the beginning of their continuous influence made on the peninsula, from architecture to language and customs. More importantly, the Muslim's arrival to the Iberian Peninsula indicates a period of co-existence between religions and cultures which is not present during the Christian Reign after they took over during the Fall of Granada. Muslims allowed for the individuals and communities that identified as Christian or Jewish to maintain their religion and customs. In contrast, the Christian monarchy weaponized religion and used religion as a justification to push the Moors out of the Iberian Peninsula. Additionally, the Christian monarchy also utilized religion to justify their bad treatment of the Moors and the exile of the Jews.
