Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

In The Picture of Dorian Gray, the main character is of course, Dorian Grey himself. He is introduced early on in the novel by his friend Basil Hallway, the painter, to Lord Henry who wishes to meet him after he has seen his portrait. This is particularly interesting as the main character is first introduced to the novel in media res though his portrait (and eventually the object of his downfall) but also by the painter and therefore architect of all this. The first visualization is created from the early descriptions of Dorian Grey. The second visualization is created from a search of all the moments where the words "Dorian Gray" appear in the novel and the paragraphs which concern the character that are around it. This is for the whole novel.
La peau de chagrin
Balzac's descriptions are extremely wordy and detailed. This serves to create a rich and multifaceted character in Raphael de Valentin. For the descriptions of Raphaël de Valentin, I chose to focus on the very beginning before he discovers the peau de chagrin and the moments immediately leading up to this. I believe this is very original because it informs the reader a great deal about the character i.e he is gambling and his loss lead him to want to commit suicide. Although, Raphaël is the main character , until he gets the peau he is referred to as the "jeune homme" and the "inconnu". The Tale of the 672nd Night
Visualizations in the Tale of the 672nd night are a little bit trickier than in the two other works. Firstly, there isn't a version of the text available online, therefore I must type out the entirety of the passages I want to use into the Voyant tool by hand. I believe this was quite interesting as it went well with the format of the novella or short story compared to the lengthy and wordy descriptions of the others. This forced me to do a close reading of the text, allowing me to chose only the paragraphs and descriptions that were pertinent to what I wanted to show. This then allowed me to get an incredibly striking visualization representing the merchant's son. Furthermore, contrary to the other two visualizations this one is much more concise but also much more true to the character.
