Yan is a master of using vivid highlights, midtones, and shadows to make a point. The everyday world of Fisheye Placebo is characterized by blacks and dark greys. The buildings are drab metal, with dark shadows and sharp highlights. Vance and Frey's dorm room looks more like a prison than a home. In contrast, the digital world is almost painfully white. The environment is lit intensely from above - there are few shadows, and the ones that are present are a light grey.
No works showcase the vast difference between two color palettes than both versions of "Rise". The night version is dominated by black shadows, red midtones, and yellow-white highlights, leading to an air of repression and fear. The day version, however, is dominated by dark grey shadows, blue midtones, and yellow-white highlights, leading to an air of hope.
