Herbarium: Medicinal Plants as Information

Leaf Distribution

The distribution of leaves on the plant is not uniform. Instead, there are more leaves toward the top of the plant and toward the bottom of the plant. This uneven distribution of leaves could determine what amount of resources the plant requires. More leaves at the top of the plant suggests the plant needs a lot of sunlight since more leaves allow for a greater surface area for sunlight absorption. Fewer leaves at the bottom of the plant may suggest that the plant does not need as much water since the roots could have less exposure to water with more leaf coverage.
