Herbarium: Medicinal Plants as Information

The Narrative of the Pedicularis densiflora (Indian Warrior) and the Platycerium superbum (Staghorn Fern)

Although this individual page will connect back with the original project plant specimen, it will specifically discuss the Platycerium superbum, better known as the staghorn fern, which we observed in the UCLA Botanical Garden. I do not know much information about this particular specimen other than what I can see from looking at the plant itself, so any historical information such as collection, identification, classification, contextualization, etc would have to be inferred or generalized. I would like to reference the annotations made from our Week 6 discussion when writing this section, as well as use it to flow into a section that more generally describes the physiological characteristics and functions of the observed specimen.

Additionally, I will touch on the medicinal properties of this plant, which include antiulcer remedies, miscarriage prevention, coughs, and hypertension. I will also be discussing the historical and cultural relevance of the plants medicinal properties, as well as its implications for future use within the medical and pharmaceutical industries.

Lastly, I will include images of the observed specimen from the UCLA Botanical Garden and my annotated journal rendition of the specimen. There will also be text explaining the context of these media, what they depict, and they further explain the “big idea” at hand.
