Herbarium: Medicinal Plants as Information

Roots

The projecting roots are thick and strong, Unlike the thinner branches producing lofty stems, leaves, and flowers, the roots at the bottom of the plant are sturdy, strong, and lack leaves and flowers. The complex, winding structure these form anchors the rest of the plant. The wide base of roots suggests that the plant would be very stable. This is to prevent it from blowing away or being uprooted in a windstorm.
