The fruit at the tip of E. laevigatum is acorn-shaped and seems hard. This may be the case for easier pollination.

What is being annotated is actually a sterile stem. Fertile stems would have a 1/2 to 1-inch cone at the tip of the stem, as pictured in the historical image below.
