Bark and woody primary growth

Bark and woody primary growth. Slender, wooden twigs emerge from a central stem, all covered in a thin layer of smooth, grey bark. From this sample, one can infer that the plant invests significant resources into developing strong wooden structures, at the expense of height and overall size. Thin strips of bark are used by the Salish people of the Pacific Northwest in a "10-bark" decoction to treat tuberculosis, venereal disease, and ulcers.
