Alternating branch structure

Small, wooden twigs emerge from a central stem in an alternating pattern, ranging in size from 1.5 to 12 cm in length. Leaves are only found on the twigs, which have the same general appearance as the main stem: thin, smooth, and mostly linear. The alternating habit of this specimen’s outermost growth indicates that the full plant does not grow symmetrically, but instead produces a dense net of branches and leaves (alternation allows more branches per volume than opposite branches).
