Branch knots

Along the primary branch and offshoots, there are knots. These knots are both darker in color and protrude from the rest of the branch. The knots are for the most part evenly spaced. The general size of and distance between knots correlates with the thickness or age of each branch. If the bush grows in these segments, it can be presumed that the knots can be used to measure the bush's past growth.
