STORY MAP - SAMPLING IN HIP HOP AND THE GLOBAL CONNECTION

For this particular exercise I decided to use the readings and authors for class as a guideline to critique and highlight the communities behind my process of my story map and the connections I made.

In the world of digital story telling by Lambert and Hessler they touch on the importance of Fan based media and sampling as ways for more people to get connected to digital storytelling. I think the success of both these concepts can be seen within the hip hop and sampling community. The website whosampled.com is listed as a reference and was a great help during my research. The website was started by fans of Hip hop with an interest in sharing and cataloguing the samples of songs they loved. The entire community surrounding this website is in essence fan based media. Anyone can make an account and contribute and there is thriving community behind archiving music and finding the original samples in songs today. Additionally fans of the genre already pull together to make samples in line with what Hessler and Lambert imagined. You can go online and find people creating sample breakdowns of entire albums recreating the beats and talking about the history of the music. In some sense the community surrounding this interest could be more fragmented digital story or archive.

If I were to improve this Story map I would add more of a personal connection. When taking Poletti's perspective on point of view when telling the story I feel like I fail to communicate my connection to this story below a surface level. It is important for the viewer of this story map to understand the message I am trying to communicate through this map and why. I feel like I focused too much on presenting the information and less about why it would matter to me or the viewer. If I was to go back I would add more detail and possibly memories attached to these songs, all of them have a personal connection I failed to mention.

Finally I found it interesting how I was exposed to similar diaspora's twice within this class and my story map project. When we listened to Heejin Hong's story "Empacar la maleta" on the intercultural tales website I was amazed. I had no idea about the Eastern Asian diaspora within Southern America. It was eye opening and to have a similar background show up with Lisa Ono was very affirming. I probably wouldn't have looked up Lisa Ono's personal life or have been exposed to Herein Hong's story if it wasn't for this class and digital storytelling. I'm very grateful for a new experience and knowledge I can carry with me.
