East LA

Organize this Page Around Ghost Map of East LA

Two great east-west arteries embrace the homeland of Latino Los Angeles: Cesar Chavez Ave/Avenida Cesar Chavez (formerly Brooklyn Ave) and Whittier Blvd. The LA River is the western boundary and the bridges over that river provide panoramic views of Downtown to the west and Boyle Heights to the east. At the end of the 19th century East LA still looked like open bluffs from Downtown. Laid-out on the cross-river streetcar suburban model of Brooklyn New York, Boyle Heights, Wellington Heights, and Lincoln Heights were subdivisions of the *** Rancho. Literally enough, developer Andrew Workman named the main thoroughfare Brooklyn Avenue. Broad cemeteries kept much of this area open to the sky, but the hilly slopes were sill lightly settled compared to the area west of the River before the Second World War. While Hollenbeck Park had a lagoon; the lakeless Laguna Park offered one of many available open public spaces for recreation and, occasionally, protest.
