Gender Equity in Early Childhood Education

Introduction

This project explores gender equity in early childhood care and education (ECCE), focusing on girls’ gender identity development in early childhood and girls’ access to ECCE programs as a key component of gender equity in ECCE. We consider the important role of parents in this crucial time of girls’ lives and educational experience, exploring how parents’ gendered attitudes can impact girls’ access to and experience in ECCE. We argue that the path to gender equity lies in equal access to ECCE programs during the formative early childhood years, and that a key piece to achieving gender equity in early childhood education and thereafter must include the analysis and transformation of gendered attitudes of parents.
