Fragmentary Excess: Body, Text, Receptacle

Thumb Wars

Carefully lacquered fingernails drop soil adjacent to breathing mud. Gloved fingers follow and then soapy hands -- a flash of a face -- while an undulating voice bends “thumb wars for one, tongue twister for none, and congratulations you won” in warped swirls of sound. Hubbell challenges our visible and sensory perceptions here through highly aestheticized and yet disturbing images flickering back and forth on the diptych screens. Her “tongue-twisting” images and sound reverberate off a defunct tongue, revealing a libidinal dystopic desire.
