Fort Snelling

Use of the Site

Today, in addition to the fort's interpretation that avoids overtly mentioning injustices towards the Dakota, there is a divide between the Historic Fort Snelling, operated by the Minnesota Historical Society, and Fort Snelling State Park, which holds the physical site of the concentration camp.

This site of the concentration camp where over 1,700 innocent Dakota people were held now acts as a parking lot for the Fort Snelling State Park Visitor Center.

In many ways, the State Park does much more to honor the Dakota than the Minnesota historical Society does on their site. A large memorial stands adjacent the visitor center that acknowledges the use of Fort Snelling as a concentration camp, and lists the names and numbers of those imprisoned. There is not officially any programming for the site, yet the adjacent visitor's center does have ample information available for visitors.
