Fort Snelling

Other Available Resources

The Minnesota Historical Society is the writer and publisher for Northern Lights, the textbook given all 6th graders to learn Minnesota Studies as seen on the previous page.

The Minnesota Historical Society also publishes an app for iPad use, which is available to all social studies classes in Minneapolis. We have attempted to download and view the app to see if any other information about this historic mass incarceration is available in a digital format. However, the app is contained behind a paywall with no available method with which to sign up.

As to why the Minnesota Historical Society would contain this additional text behind a paywall, we can only speculate. It seems an ill-informed idea, as mass circulation of their texts would seem to benefit not only them but the history of Minnesota. Additionally, anyone in a homeschool setting would not have equal access to educational materials.

Whether or not any additional information is contained in the digital app remains to be seen. We do know, thanks to interviews with educators in Minneapolis Public Schools, that no other resources are provided to them, nor or they required to talk about Fort Snelling per the state curriculum. It is also interesting to note that within the promotional video, the phrase "meets all state standards" is emphasized. Perhaps then the book should not be in question, but rather the state-mandated education standards for Minnesota history.
