Building T-1: Post Headquarters

Built: 1938

Function during the CCC era: Post Headquarters Building. The Works Progress Administration-appropriated funds provided for construction of this structure, which enveloped the previous post chapel. The project incorporated new heating, electrical work, and phone line installation.

Current function: This building has had many different uses throughout its life, including:

1941-42: Alien Detention Hearings conducted for Japanese nationals by the U.S. Department of Justice during the World War II internment period. A special courtroom was constructed for the activity, which underwent restoration in the 2010’s.
1962-65 - Leased for U.S. Air Force use.
C. 1970-c. 2009 - U.S. Forest Service ownership; utilized as Northern Region Technology Development Center.
2009-present - HMFM ownership and restoration of the courtroom.

5. Building T-316: CCC Administration Building Built in 1936. From construction until 1942, this Cape Cod- style structure served as as the central location from which Corps projects were assigned and supported by a large staff of officers and clerical workers. A nearby temporary building to the west housed WUBL, the Fort’s radio operation. After WWII, it was utilized as a headquarters and armory by the Montana National Guard and for a brief period in the late 1970’s as offices for the National Center for Career Education. In 2000 the Rocky Mountain Museum of Military History began restoration of the structure, and it now serves as their central exhibit building.

12. Building 4: Recreation Center Built in 1940. Fort Missoula received substantial appropriations from the Works Progress Administration in the late 1930s to reconstruct and rehabilitate many of the post’s older buildings and to construct new ones. This large log-built recreation center featured air conditioning, a basketball court on the first floor and a basement bowling alley. Further amenities included a kitchen, bar, and stage. At the time of its completion, it was the largest log structure in the state. Intended for CCC use, it primarily served the internees during the later Alien Detention Center period. The building was destroyed by fire on December 7, 1946.
