What is a first-generation colleges student?
A first-generation college student (FGCS) is "the first, or one of the first, in their families to pursue postsecondary education" (Inkelas, Daver, Vogt, & Leonard, 2007, p. 404).
Who are first-generation college students?According to Allison (2012), the first-generation college student population is typically comprised of students from historically disadvantaged groups. This includes:
- students of color
- students from low socio-economic backgrounds
- students from immigrant families
