My Final Reflection...

HONG KONG

Hong Kong is a self-governing city and a former British colony, in southeastern China. On July 1st, 1997 was when the British government handed over Hong Kong to China under the premise that Hong Kong would be its own, self-governing city for 50 years which was agreed upon. Being a city in China that is very different from the other cities in China, Hong Kong faced many difficulties and benefits. The uniqueness Hong Kong possesses allows it to flourish and expand in a myriad of ways, all-while facing a lot of tension in politics and customs & traditions coming from the Mainland of China. Nonetheless, Hong Kong manufactures an extensive amount of pop culture whether it be electronics such as the Nintendo Entertainment system, media such as Animation and television dramas, fashion, and visual arts such as graffiti art, Canton porcelain, and pop music. Hong Kong is located right next to a deepwater port, which is one of the major mediums besides the internet where it engages in most of its reception and delivery of pop culture. This port allows the pop culture to literally travel across borders, obviously going through quality control before reaching its destination. Hong Kong was the world's eighth largest trading economy in 1997 which is a clear indication of the abundance of culture coming in and out of Hong Kong. Hong Kong's history and future both caught me by surprise in that I thought Hong Kong was always a part of China's system and the fact that a "new" city in an "old" nation is self-governing as well as flourishing is beyond inspiring.
