MEDIA PROJECT
In Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, two of Hong Kong’s prominent cinema stars - Chow Yun-fat and Michelle Yeoh - take on the roles of two legendary warriors named Li Mu Bai and Yu Shu Lien. Li Mu Bai owns this extremely powerful, magical sword called “The Green Destiny”, and decides to retire and give it to his friend/benefactor, Sir Te. While it is in his friend’s captivity, an inconspicuous figure , who is thought to be the male protegĂ© of Li Mu Bai’s arch-nemesis, Jade Fox, steals the sword, thus serving as the catalyst for a myriad of other things that transpire during the majority of the film. These transpirations are heavily associated with Jen Yu, who is the daughter of a noble and rich governor seeking freedom from the system of being set up by her father and family to marry someone else instead of being able to be free and marry the man she loves who is an outlaw, and travel the world.
The media project I have created is simply a collage of inspiring gender-neutrality themes, powerful women scenes from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and different artwork coming from contemporary women artists, all on a set of newspaper articles relating to the betterment of the dynamics between women and society as well as relating to the betterment of the inner strength of women. The overall message my media project is portraying to the audience is that “All Humans are Equal” no matter what race, social class, religion, or even Comic Universe they are from. The reason I have chosen this “Breaking News” type of medium is because it allows the message to be “broadcasted” throughout all time periods and to all types of people in all types of social classes - just as news is broadcasted to a wide range of people these days.
The images from this collage that highlight this message of “All Humans are Equal” are the pictures of Jen and Lo, her lover who is an outlaw, signifying how she has always had the ability to fulfill her own wishes to be free and be able to truly love someone; fight scenes from the climactic battle between Jen and Yu Shu Lien along with pictures of other female superheroes , signifying how women have the raw strength to fight for and defend what they want to fight for or defend; and an edit of the “Declaration of Independence” which now states “... all men
** AND WOMEN ** are created equal…,”, signifying how women deserve to be heard and deserve to be respected and dignified as humans just as men are. Ultimately, the media and making this media deepened my belief in the need for not only Gender Neutrality but Human Neutrality all around the world. The fact that everyone assumingly thought that Fox’s protegĂ© was a strong man instead of a strong woman was an eye-opener to inequality, and how even as a prominent female aristocrat, Jen Yu had her free will in terms of who she will love and spend the rest of her life with revoked from her as if it were some type of card. This is all preposterous behavior because we are all children of God - therefore our sisters deserve the same amount of respect as our brothers and not be dismissed, demeaned, victimized, and marginalized.
