Psy, KPop, and Its Influence

Psy’s music videos have always been ones I have enjoyed because of his flare and the different style he has from the typical western artists I am used to. I remember when Psy released Gangnam Style in 2012 and it became a huge hit in America. It is interesting to me that a music video so different, even in a different language, could climb the charts here in America. I think the reason that K-pop became so popular in the United States is because of these differences and how it strays from typical American music. For example, K-pop tends to utilize brighter colors and a more intense dancing style to grab the audience's attention and keep it. Even though they may not know the words, the visuals are so enticing that you end up enjoying it anyways. The dance moves used in the video are always random and kind of funny, but they are always simple enough for the audience to do as well. I remember after Gangnam Style came out everyone was doing the dance shown in the video. It is interesting to see how a culture so different such as K-pop can sweep America. People today in the United States are still huge fans of K-pop and the trend only seems to keep growing. Outlets such as YouTube and Twitter and other social media help to promote these ideas and spread them. For example, much of Psy’s work might not have been recognized as much if it wasn't able to be seen by millions of people on Youtube. These creative outlets help people to share and spread not only their ideas but also their culture.
