A Better Tomorrow

The film A Better Tomorrow caught my eye as it had a few key differences from the typical martial arts film. One aspect I enjoyed was the relationship between the two brothers. In the typical martial arts film, it is often difficult to display such a brotherhood and dynamic that is going on between Ho and Kit. However, the film did a great job adding aspects and ideas other than simply focusing on the fighting and martial arts within the movie. I noticed that this film also portrays fighting using guns other than the typical martial arts scene. Although the scenes are still action packed, the film is missing that typical “supernatural” fighting that was seen in most martial arts films during the time. 

When the film was remade in 2010, it was created for a Korean audience and so some of the key points were altered to cater to its new audience. One of the main differences is the dynamic between Ho and Kit. In the remake Ho is not a gang member, but rather a dirty police officer who deals in arms trafficking. One other aspect of the remake that I noticed was the absence of female roles. Unlike the original movie in which there are female characters such as Kit’s girlfriend, the remake has no real presence of a female character. Another major difference is the ending of the movie in which both the main characters die. This is unlike the original in which Ho and Kit are able to survive in the end and work through their problems and differences.
