Kung Fu Comedy

As this was my first time watching the film, Kung Fu Hustle was a very different experience for me. I had previously taken a film course in which we studied different films, but it mostly focused on American culture. Because of this, I was a little confused at first and didn’t really follow along. However, as the movie progressed I was able to pick up many of the different intricacies and was able to recognize the story as a whole. One thing that surprised me about the film was that it kept my attention through comedy rather than the typical martial arts scene.

Even though the film is a martial arts film, I feel like it was made for a much wider audience. The film has many similarities to American culture and films. One scene that I noticed in particular was when Sing was being chased by the Landlady. It reminded me of scenes from Looney Tunes when Coyote is chasing the Roadrunner. Another similarity that I found was Sing and Bone to George and Lennie from Of Mice and Men. Overall, the film was enjoyable and it opened me up to new ideas from other cultures while I watch film.
