Sound

Sound in films is diegetic if it takes place within the narrative ("diegesis" is a term for "the world of the story"). If only the viewer can hear it, it's non-diegetic.  (Text that appears onscreen, like credits or an "earlier that day..." type of message, is also non-diegetic.)

Dialogue is diegetic, but a film score isn't. In this clip, Luke and his aunt and uncle hear each other, but not the background music.

However, music isn't always non-diegetic (Cría Cuervos).
