Transitional Techniques 2
A graphic match joins two successive shots so as to create a visual linkage between distinct elements--sort of an optical rhyme.
Cross-cutting alternates between two or more lines of action occurring in different places, usually simultaneously. It's often used to create a sense of tension and some sort of narrative "time bomb." In this case, the simultaneity functions to ironize the narrative.
In a dissolve, one shot slowly fades into the next.
A fade is similar to a dissolve, but the image transitions into a solid color (usually black) rather than into another image.
