Exploding Tongues: Language, Art, and the Russian Avant-garde

Definition of pictorial space: frame, margin, or background?

Malevich's "Black Square" ambiguously presupposes several conflicting interpretive approaches: as an image, it overpaints an expected visual representation in black, and leaves the white as a non-signifying border or frame; as an object, the black square sits centrally against a continuous white place or volume; as a page, the blacked out lines of prosaic text reach a blank margin.
