Directing with Action Verbs!
A game to help filmmaking students give direction to their actors.
Directing w/ Action Verbs:
CARDS AGAINST SH*TTY DIRECTION
A. SETUP:
- Divide students into 8 teams of 3
- Each team receives 12 VERB Cards
- 2 teams will act as judges and sit at the center table. Teams will take turns acting as judge with every round.
B. START THE ROUND:
- A film clip of a scene is projected on the screen.
- Designated judges sit at the center table.
- After the scene, you will be ask to give direction to one of the characters in the form of an action verb.
- Each team submits an action verb that best describes the direction given to that character. (Cards should be submitted face down, so it isn’t known which team submitted which card)
- The judges will deliberate out loud on the merits of each verb. (Teams can advocate for particular action verbs but can NOT explicit say which action verb they submitted)
- Once all verbs have been analyzed, each judge will cast their vote for the action verb they feel best describes the character’s intention. (If there is a tie, the Executive Producer will cast the deciding vote.)
- The action verb with the most votes, wins.
- Each team’s cards are replenished up to 12 cards.
- Teams choose 6 cards and pass them to the team on their left.
- New round (goto B1)
C. STAGE TWO: BEFORE & AFTER THE BEAT (2 VERB PLAY)
- Characters will have different intentions before and after a dramatic beat, select a card for each intention.
