The 1980s and 1990s were decades in which gender roles were less restrictive than before. An interest in science was seen less as a masculine trait, and children were encouraged to learn regardless of gender. Scientific nonfiction books fostered their curiosity. This book in particular provided detailed information about various dinosaurs, with a two page spread crammed with diagrams, maps, several illustrations, and an explanation of what knowledge was known about that dinosaur at the time. This book does not advertise itself as the “boy’s” or “girl’s” book of dinosaurs, as the assumption is that the readers were led to read it by their own interest in the subject, not by any expectation of what they are interested in because of their gender.
