The 1980s and 1990s were decades in which gender roles were less restrictive than before. An interest in science was seen less as a masculine trait, and children were encouraged to learn regardless of gender. Scientific nonfiction books fostered their curiosity. This book, in particular, provides detailed information about various dinosaurs, with a two-page spread crammed with diagrams, maps, several illustrations, and information about each dinosaur. This book does not advertise itself as the “boy’s” or “girl’s” book of dinosaurs. Girls picked this book up because they were interested in dinosaurs or paleontology in general. They didn’t read a book intended for boys in defiance of gendered expectations; the expectations had changed.
