Jack and Jill is a magazine aimed specifically at young children, which was first published in 1938 and continues to be published today. These images are from multiple issues from 1967. The magazines include not only fictional stories and nonfictional reading passages, but also game boards and other interactive material that encouraged girls and boys to play with each other. Rather than assuming girls would follow the recipes and boys would play with the race track game, the magazine expects children to pursue their own interests, regardless of gender expectations. Jack and Jill also published letters that readers sent in, and articles about their lives and families. Girls could read about other children’s lives and interests from their own perspectives.
