This poem is a classic example of Nerudian poetic style and vision. The poem majorly explores a man’s fear of death and how one can face it. In the first half of the poem there is full of pain, isolation, alienation from the world and suddenly in the second half of the poem he rises from his own ashes like a phoenix and realizes his mission as a poet to point out the helplessness that a man faces at the brink of death and to provide encouragement to men who reek with hopelessness. The poem has an elegiac feel to it and paints a picture of impressionistic picture of doom. It sketches a metaphysical picture of the grim reality and finally the tyranny of death. The main theme of this poem is death. the dark gloomy metaphors and allusions provide a clear cut reason as to why this poem has been selected to be put in this anthology.
