Mechanics of Into the Green Green Mud

By Ashlyn Cummins

The story "Into the Green Green Mud" is a unique piece of electronic literature because of the way the "pages" are formatted. The words are broken up so that they seem like pieces of a poem or an individual poem with unique designed and moving backgrounds that complement the words and help distinguish who is thinking. It also unique that the story is controlled with with the arrows on the keyboard, so it is almost like a cross between a hyperlink narrative and a video game. It is similar to a hyper link narrative in the way that you move "from one section of the text to another noncontiguous section quickly and simply, by the means of a keystroke or two" (Gaggi 102). From the way this work is formatted where there are only a few words on each pages makes the reader think into the deeper meaning of the few words chosen to portray the story instead of skimming over like some do in paper novels or just word heavy works in general.
