Hastings was born in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, on 26 May 1875, the son of Elmer and Fannie Clement (Edgerly) Hastings. He attended Nashotah House and began his career in the Diocese of Fond du Lac. He came to Indiana in 1910 to become rector of St. John's in Elkhart. From there he moved to Peoria, Illinois, where he registered for the draft. He returned to Wisconsin and resided in Milwaukee in 1930. He was later vicar of St. Andrew's Church in Monroe. He died in Milwaukee on 28 May 1954.
