Hawthorne was born in the Roxborough section of Philadelphia on 12 June 1868, the son of Samuel and Fannie (Fleming) Hawthorne. He attended Kenyon College and was ordained a deacon in 1889 and a priest in 1894. He married Carrie E. Kimball on 2 March 1897 in Medina, Ohio. Hawthorne's first assignment was as an assistant at Grace Church in Sandusky, Ohio, from 1889 to 1890. He then went to Bexley Hall, Gambier, Ohio, from 1890 to 1893, then moved to Medina, where he was priest-in-charge of St. Paul's from 1893 to 1897. He moved to Wheaton, Illinois, in 1897 as priest-in-charge of Trinity Church, and by 1907 was in Galion, Ohio, as rector of Grace Church. In 1913, he came to Indiana and served as rector of St. Paul's Church in Hammond from 1913 to 1920. He then returned to Philadelphia, where he spent the remainder of his career. He died there on 25 April 1950 and was buried in St. Timothy's Churchyard.
